When we decided to make a Pinot Noir in 2018, we first looked for a site in Mendocino Ridge appellation, but ultimately turned to Oregon when we could not find a good, organic fruit source. In 2019 we found a great source of Pinot Noir in the appellation on the second ridge from the Pacific Ocean. This appellation is also known as Islands in the Sky because the vineyards sit on high elevation ridges above the fog line. There are great sites on the first ridge, but it is often too cold to get consistent results unless you are making sparkling wine. We are also of the mind that Pinot Noir needs to achieve a bit of ripeness (but not too much) so the wine is not green tasting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe 2021 vintage was marked by low yields and small berries. We love high elevation vineyards because the nighttime temperatures are relatively warmer and the low diurnal shift creates Pinot Noir with beautiful balance. It is a unique site at high elevation on a southwestern facing slope along the bucolic hills of the Chehalem Mountains.  The vineyard is dry farmed organically and is planted to Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay, Grüner Veltliner and Mondeuse Noir. Although appellation rules do not allow us to label this bottle with its specific provenance (this is because we trucked the grapes from Oregon back to our winery in California), this wine is a pure expression of the La Belle Promenade Vineyard. The 2021 vintage in Oregon was one with reduced yields and intense fruit. Since the vineyard is so far away, we rely on the experience and expertise of our dear friend Grant Coulter who manages the vineyard and makes wine for both Flaneur and his own Hundred Suns wineries. Our picking window is on the lower end of the ripening scale because we would like to achieve a wine that has tension and tautness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs always, this wine turned out quite stunning. When fruit from this vineyard became available to us, we jumped at the chance to bring into the winery and inevitable add it to our growing repertoire of fine wines. This vineyard is in a little-known part of California, in a tucked away spot within the Cienega Valley AVA near Hollister. The Lime Kiln Valley is known for its unique sandy, gravelly loam soils over a base of dolomite and limestone and planted there are heritage grapes such as Zinfandel along with a rare varieties like old vine Mourvèdre and Cabernet Pfeffer, also known as Mourtaou.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Enz Vineyard Red Wine is one of the rare wines we have made that required extensive barrel aging, with 22 months in barrel. The result is a rather cozy wine that is perfect for the cooler months with hearty fare and a roaring fire. We are quite happy with how this wine has evolved. Our initial release was named after Joel’s eldest daughter, Cézanne, and it quickly became a fan favorite. But Joel’s younger daughter was wondering when she’d get a wine of her own! The 2022 vintage introduced Cuvée Esmé Anne, a captivating expression from the same vineyard that reveals just how much nuance can be coaxed out with a few thoughtful tweaks. This wine dials up the complexity without losing the elegance that makes our Chenin so beloved. Think of it as a “reserve” wine; indeed, this wine earned first place at\u003cem\u003e The 1976 Redo\u003c\/em\u003e, a blind tasting judged by an independent panel where standout Chenin Blancs from the US and France were poured side by side.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCrafted in the spirit of our favorite Chenins from Saumur’s famed hill of Brézé in the Loire Valley, this bottle delivers subtle citrus notes seamlessly woven into a sleek, mineral frame.
