We found an old vineyard on Sonoma Mountain that we worked with from 2015 through 2018. This vineyard was very special and made a Cabernet that was taught and red fruited. Sadly, that vineyard source was too low yielding to be sustainable for the grower, so in 2019 we searched for a new source. We were very fortunate to find Emmitt-Scorsone’s Vinegrove Vineyard in a protected pocket valley in Sonoma’s Dry Creek Valley. The vineyard is really special because although the region is quite warm, the vineyard is protected from getting baked by western sun exposure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is certainly the sexiest Cabernet Sauvignon we have made. It has vibrant aromas of cassis, cocoa, and black cherry with subtle notes of licorice and hot rocks. On the palate you’ll find bright and intense black cherry, blackberry, with cocoa and violets. It has a seamless midpalate with fine minerality balanced acidity and refined tannins that lead to a long finish. The Lime Kiln Valley is known for its unique sandy, gravelly loam soils over a base of dolomite and limestone and planted there are heritage grapes such as Zinfandel along with a rare varieties like old vine Mourvèdre and Cabernet Pfeffer, also known as Mourtaou.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Enz Vineyard Red Wine is one of the rare wines we have made that required extensive barrel aging, with 22 months in barrel. The wine we made from the vintage tasted astounding, so we kept one 800L demi muid out of the Superbloom blend to see how it aged. The 2022 vintage was marked by a very late season at the vineyard which really put us on high alert when we got some high temperatures over 115F. We were able to get the grapes into the winery before a rain came that would have destroyed the crop This wine has a ruby color but with medium light intensity. The nose shows subtle red plum, savory spice, damp earth and anise. This wine always smells like the vineyard. The palate excites with boysenberry and blueberry in the attack and layers of raspberry and red licorice with a frame of lime and slate mineral. It is very delicate on the palate with very fine tannin to support the wine. What we like the most about this wine is the nerve and the freshness. It is also very linear without the huge blockyness or saltyness you see in many California pinot noirs.
